Pull toys designed for our little siblings but teaching us how to use the tools.

French seams and hemming to make our boxers secure.

Unpicking is time consuming but the results are worth it.

Now how do I do this seam again.

No it's not finger painting, its is putting a layer down for the background.

Getting things just right takes time.

Some completed travel games. Cross halving joints help teach us accuracy for measuring and cutting to make a tight fit..

Cycle 3 Begins!

Two new year 7 classes arrived to begin their soft material technology experience today. Everyone was thinking well and were working hard on being self managers as they had their first "drive" on the sewing machines.

Patu and Mere Project

Students are working steadily on their Patu and Mere.

Initial shaping has occurred and the smoothing of the edges is taking longer then they thought.

Protocols are being observed and an understanding of the importance of the article is understood.

Students working on new project which is designed to learn how to use a tenon saw and chisel correctly.

Some students are finding this a bit hard but the majority are developing the skills needed and making a really good product,

Patu and Mere Project

Started today with my year 10 students on their Patu and Mere project.
All students were informed of their need to sign a form which stated that these products were not to be used as weapons before being allowed to start.

With a large class this is some undertaking. What with the students' size and the number of students in the class there is little space to move.

Most of the students were motivated and enthusiastic about the project.

Quite a few students found using the bow saws difficult and some still struggled with the coping saws with the thicker timber.
Deciding to allow the students to use the bandsaws saved a lot of broken blades and time along with improving the accuracy.

Some students think that this will be a quick project but they may find that they are mistaken.

Had a group of year 10 students who have shown that they are capable of working well when motivated. They have discovered that personal issues are not to be introduced into class as they hinder results.
Students worked quite slowly but steadily on products which will need to be completed next session.

Impressed with two students who collaborated together and thought outside the square.

Students on Tuesday

Year 7 students are amazing.
They often come into the workshop with no idea of technology or the processes involved which are needed within the hard materials workshop. After 3 days are they have shown themselves to be reasonably confident and beginning to display independent.
Todays two schools have progressed rapidly and are utilizing the skills and processes needed for this class. Some are well in advance of other students.
